Bunion Deformities or Hallux Abducto Valgus (Under Construction)

Hallux Valgus or bunion is a common deformity that can affect anyone.  What are bunions?  Outwardly, is is the painful bony "bump" that "grows" out of the foot at the base of the big toe.  In addition, the deformities associated with bunions is deviation of the big toe towards the 2nd, often with a hammertoe of the 2nd toe.  Clinically, hallux valgus is a deviation or subluxation of the big toe joint with inward migration of the1st metatarsal or the bone behind the great toe.  This leads to a bony prominence that can become inflamed and irritated with shoegear.  This malalignment is progressive and can lead to conditions of the great toe joint such as osteoarthritis, cartilage damage, limited, painful range of motion, spurs, other digital deformities, and limitation of shoegear.

There are many theories for the etiology or etilologies of bunion deformities.  It is generally accepted that a combination of genetic predisposition, activity, gait abnormalities, shoegear, and trauma contribute to the formation and aggravation of bunions.

At birth and during growth, the foot joints will obtain various amounts of flexibility or elasticity.  The amount or lack of flexibility will determine the rate of progression of the deformity.  Trauma that contributes to bunion formation can range from direct trauma (such as fractures as ligament tears from falls and falling objects) to seemingly innocuous activities such as walking and running.  Low arches, high arches, and normal arched feet are all susceptible to bunion deformity.

Gait abnormalities such as abnormal pronation can apply forces with each step to increase the bunion deformity.  Tight and cramped shoes will re- enforce the deviation, increasing the symptoms.

We offer a range of plans of care from conservative symptomatic treatment to surgical treatment of the deformity.  The course of treatment for bunions varies with each individual patient's case.  The plan must take into account the patient's foot type (arch type, flexibility, other bony issues), gait, and the patient's comfort level with the aggressiveness of the various options.

We will take the time to perform a thorough evaluation and give an indepth explanation with treatment options.
